India's construction industry is the second largest employer after agriculture, providing employment to about 35 million people. The advent of new and frontier technologies and the adoption of modern construction methods have increased the demand for skilled manpower and the objective of construction vocational training is to address this growing industry need.
We set up our first Construction Skills Training Institute (CSTI) in late 1995 at Chennai, Tamil Nadu and, presently with 8 more CSTIs, this has emerged as a successful model to address training and employment needs among youths for the construction industry. For 25 years, CSTIs have been developing skilled workforce through structured training that enables both new entrants and less experienced workers in the industry to progressively improve their knowledge and competencies in various trades. Construction skill standards have been formulated for different trades after carefully analysing the knowledge and the skill expected for each level of competency. In addition, different trade tests have been specified to assess the knowledge and skill levels attained.
Trained over 300,000 youth
All the courses are designed as short-term vocational training that varies from 200 hours spread over a month to 600 hours spread over 3 months, depending on the trades. The coverage is practical oriented (80%) and classroom training (20%).
The training programme has been designed using a modular approach for continuous assessment of achievement and recognition at each stage of training. Trade competency tests at all levels are conducted at periodical intervals to determine the knowledge and skill standards attained.

Recognitions & Awards Partnerships
Dubbed as Skill Olympics, World Skills organises the world championship of vocational skills that is held every two years in different parts of the world with 79 countries participating for different competitions.
Candidates nominated to represent India for Concrete Construction Work were exclusively trained at our various CSTIs and they secured 7th place in Russia World Skills (2019) held at Kazan. That apart, the CSTI trained candidates managed to secure 4th place in the Russia Skills competition.
UKIERI undertook a scoping exercise at our CSTIs to understand teaching practices adopted, observe skill applications and resources available. In 2014, our instructors visited UK to study their skill ecosystem and explore adopting best practices across the CSTIs in India. The association has raised the bar and set the standard for quality teaching in India's construction sector.
Along with the Department for International Development (DFID) & Construction Skill Development Council (CSDC), we conducted the first ever ToMT program for the construction sector. The training was imparted by a UK training partner, QFI (Qualification for Industry) aimed to develop skilled trainers in line with international best practices. The program was conducted for six job roles at two levels and successful trainees received 2 certifications: NSDC certified Master Trainer for specific job role and QFI certificate of learning achievement in both domain and platform skills.
Collaborated with CSCs (Common Service Centres) under the Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DeitY) for skilling the rural youth through CSTIs across the country.
Through our CSTIs, we are directly implementing skill development programmes among five aspirational districts in five states in partnership with NITI Aayog since 2019. While the State Governments provide the basic infrastructure, we invest to set up skill training centres and support the trainees in placement after training. Additionally, we play the role of a knowledge partner to about 30 Government ITIs across seven states, to promote training in construction trades and support to place the trained candidates.
