The Lucknow Metro (Phase 1) involved a 8.5 km stretch that we completed in just 36 months! We achieved this speed thanks to the use of precast construction. The pier caps were precast; cast in a yard in moulds, transported to site on low bed trailers and erected on in-situ piers. The precast super structures comprised a girder stressed and cast in a 6-mould system. The station concourses are of precast cross beams erected over longitudinal beams cast on metallic sheets as sacrificial shutter. This method avoided disruption of traffic / public on a live road. A statue at a specific road junction precluded the use of piers that called for an ingenious use of a 60 m steel bridge to span the section. Phase 2 involved the construction of 9.59 km of elevated viaduct and 8 elevated stations that was again done in double quick time.
