Kattupalli, completely conceptualized, developed and designed in house, accommodates three major facilities: shipbuilding, port (recently sold to the Adanis) and a modular fabrication facility. One of the largest shipyards in Asia, Kattupalli is the only one with a ship lift, has an annual production capacity of 4,65,000 tons and one of the major international destinations for ship repair in the South East Asian region. Executed under tough marine conditions, at a remote location (35 km from Chennai), it involved the transportation of over 2.9 million tons of rock from quarries located over 100 km away across inferior roads. A standout feature is the breakwater; a portion of the core was designed and constructed with dredged sand by optimizing the rock quarrying requirement and speeding up construction. The wave walls for the breakwater were redesigned as precast PCC wave wall to accelerate breakwater construction to compensate the time loss due to cyclone impacts. We have also built two kms Approach Trestles in the Sea.
